About Clarity Sensors
Clarity Sensors is a Cambridge-based deep-tech company developing next-generation photon-counting X-ray detector technology using advanced perovskite semiconductors. Spun out from pioneering research within the University of Cambridge’s Optoelectronic Materials and Device Spectroscopy Group, the company is on a mission to improve the safety, quality and accessibility of X-ray imaging across healthcare, security screening and industrial inspection. Supported by significant research funding, including a major European Innovation Council grant, Clarity Sensors is now entering an exciting phase of growth as it brings its breakthrough technology closer to commercialisation.
The Brief
Clarity Sensors partnered with Pure to appoint an R&D Lead, a business-critical hire who would play a central role in advancing its technology roadmap and supporting the company's growth ambitions. The business required a rare combination of deep technical expertise, leadership capability and commercial awareness, with the successful candidate expected to oversee R&D activities, manage projects and help bridge the gap between cutting-edge scientific research and commercial application within a fast-paced, early-stage environment.
Our Approach
Working closely with the leadership team, Phillip Watson developed a detailed understanding of Clarity Sensors' technology, culture and long-term objectives to build a highly targeted search strategy. Extensive market mapping and candidate engagement were undertaken across specialist sectors including semiconductors, radiation detection and advanced materials, with a particular focus on identifying individuals who could combine scientific credibility with leadership potential and the adaptability required to succeed within a scaling technology business.
